Health district tackling new strategies to reduce HIV cases

LAS VEGAS - The Southern Nevada Health District is challenging the valley to implement HIV-AIDS intervention and strategies.
Tuesday they announced their 90-90-90 challenge.
It's a challenge that's a set of goals which focuses on eliminating AIDS as a public health threat.
This week the health district plans to reach these goals through academic detailing training for staff,    and the expansion of bio-medical interventions.
"When public health is successful you don't hear about us. In this case, we've only been marginally successful, and that marginality is that until 2017 the number of those cases were rising and now they seem stable, but a year does not a trend make. So, now is the time to get under HIV disease and now's the time to get it under control," said Chief Health Officer Dr. Joe Iser, SNHD.
Rates of new HIV diagnoses decreased from 2012 to 2016 while rates in Clark County have remained the same. The county represented for 90 percent of Nevada's new HIV diagnoses in 2017.
